DIY Flower Embellies (Ten Things: Buttons!)

Saturday, April 13, 2013

I know I'm not the only one thinking this when I say "Where the heck is spring?"  I'm ready for flowers and sunshine and skirts and the like.  Instead, Illinois has had the pleasure of winter-like weather: cloudy, windy, cold, and lots of rain and occasional sleet.  I'm just so ready for that all to go away.  Since Mother Nature really isn't helping towards that, I've been creating lots of springy projects to keep my mood up and happy.

A few weeks ago, I created the above embellishments for Ten Things: Buttons.  (Sorry, I'm a little behind on Ten Things posts, but I'm catching up quickly and will be back on track soon).  I've never created my own embellishments before and often use store-bought embellishments for my projects.  But, since it's on my "Must Try" craft list, I had to give it a try.

I created the embellishments {mostly} using what I had laying around my craft table and scrap pile.  The key to these embellishments is layering!  Here's how to create these simple embellishments:
  • Gather bits and bobs, such as paper or plastic flowers, punched or fussy-cut circles, little punched pieces (like the ribbons and bunnies above.  See the ribbon underneath the button on the flower on the left?)
  • Layer!  (I layered first before adhering to see how I wanted the layers to go).
  • AdhereMicro Glue Dots and Mini Glue Dots worked really well for creating these.
  • Ta da!  Handful of embellies!!!

I used one of the handmade embellishments (with the bunny, of course!) to create this card for my mother-in-law (who I am so grateful for to come over and help us unpack and get settled in our new home).  And here's a close-up on just the card.

Products used: washi tape (green dotted): Bella Blvd; paper flowers, patterned paper (yellow and green dotted): scraps; bunny punch: Martha Stewart Crafts; button: craft supply; stamp (gratitude): Unity.
I hope you enjoyed this post and it inspires you to give a try at your own handmade embellishments.
