Altered Box Tutorial: Fall Photos

Sunday, September 16, 2012

Pssst.  Hey, you.  Did you know its almost fall?  Can you believe it?  Fall is when the kiddies go back to school, which means time to catch up on things.  Even though I don't have kiddies yet, I look forward to fall because the crazy and fun summer is ending, and I have more time to catch up on some much-need-to-be-completed projects.

It's been a while since I've shared a tutorial, and now that my camera is back and squeeky clean, I thought it would be the perfect time to share a tutorial.  This one is an easy peasy tutorial for an altered photo box (above).  It's really just {mostly} decorating, but anyhow, here's how its done:

1. Start with your box.  If you are like me, and your box opens on the SIDES instead of ON TOP, you will want to follow these instructions to get your box to open on top.

2. Take your box apart completely.  (Be careful not to rip too hard if it is already glued down).  It should look like this once all the flaps are separated.
3.  Re-seal the box on all sides and flaps (as shown in this photo and the one below) using a heavy-duty adhesive.  (I used Therm-O-Web's red sticky tape).

4.  Use a craft knife to cut open the left, front, and right sides only of the box.  Make sure to cut on the seams of the box and cut thick enough for the craft knife to go through.

5.  Your box should now open from the top.  Yeah!
6. Sand down the edges of your box (the edges that open) to make it a little easier for the box to open and close.

7.  Paint the inside of your box.  (I used acrylic paint, which is acid-free and safe for your photos).

8. Add cardstock to the outside of your box.  (The easiest way to do this is to measure the sides and top and then cut your paper according to your measurements).

9. Add ribbon to all sides of the box and a few fabric leaves to the front panel.

10.  Adhere fabric leaves to the inside of the box top.
11.  Add photos to the inside.
12.  Add some coordinating paper, ribbon strips, embellishments, and "fall photos" to the top of your box.

{Products used: box: recycled; cardstock-Recollections; fall leaves large ribbon-Walmart; fabric leaves-Michael's; alphabet stickers: "fall"-American Crafts, "photos"-Lilly Bee Designs; ribbon strips-craft supply; flower and bling-craft supply; other: ink, paint, sanding tool, and craft knife}.

I hope you enjoyed my tutorial for this altered box!  As always, thanks for reading!
